Di-Arezzo | Michael Nyman: Time Will Pronounce For Violin Cello And Piano: Chamber
For violin cello and piano'The title 'Time Will Pronounce'is taken from the last lines of Joseph Brodsky’s poem 'Bosnia Tune' which deals with the horror of the unnecessary unacceptable daily deaths in Bosnia during 1992 (andstill in 1993): ‘Time whose sharp blood-thirsty quill parts the killed from those who kill will pronounce the latter tribe as your type’. The violin and cello are (generally) treated as a unit independent of the piano. Theform (generally) alternates slow and fast tempi without motivation. The musical ideas are (generally) carried over from section to section. (Generally) the harmonic melodic and textual materials features third and semitonesderived (generally) from the movement of the bass part in the opening bars.24.99 EUR - Voir plus - Acheter Voir couverture |

Di-Arezzo | Michael Nyman: In Re Don Giovanni: String Ensemble: Score
British composer Michael Nyman ‘discovered’ this work when he played Leporello’s catalogue aria from Mozart’s opera Don Giovanni on the Piano in the style of Jerry Lee Lewis. He has written that that musical discovery ‘dictatedthe dynamic articulation and texture of everything I’ve subsequently done’. The work is based on the first sixteen bars of the Catalogue Aria with thrusting rhythmic propulsion and repeated double stops for all instrumentsproduced within a short thrilling time frame.8.99 EUR - Voir plus - Acheter Voir couverture |
Di-Arezzo | Michael Nyman: String Quartet No.3: String Orchestra: Score
The composer made this arrangement of the Third String Quartet for string orchestra in March 2003. The first performance was given by the Eos Orchestra New York conducted by Ken Selden in the Concert Hall Ethical CulturalSociety New York City on 24 April 2003.Quoting composer: In the summer of 1989 I composed a choral work Out of the Ruins for Agnieszka Piotrowska’s BBC2 documentary which dealt with the physical and emotional responsesof some of the inhabitants of Leninakhan to the earthquake which devastated Armenia the previous December. When he heard the recording of the work that I made with the Holy Echmiadzin Chorus under the fervent conducting of KhorenMeykhanejian Alex Balanescu suggested turning Out of the Ruins into a string quartet. There seemed no reason or opportunity to do this until I felt the need to add to the intensity of my experiences in Armenia the no lessprofound experience of witnessing the images of the Romanian revolution on television during the latter part of December 1989.Just as the structure of my Third String Quartet (1990) may connect it with the First so they alsoshare a debt to Thurston Dart (my professor at King’s College London between 1961 and 1965). It was Dart who had the inspiration to send me to Romania in 1965 ostensibly to study folk music. The volumes of transcriptions that Ibrought back with me had remained unopened until with this proposed ‘celebratory’ string quartet (though at the time it was difficult to know quite what to celebrate in postrevolutionary Romania) an occasion arose where I coulduse this material in what seemed to me was a non-exploitative manner. The compositional procedure was as follows: to take Out of the Ruins as a template on which the Romanian vocal or instrumental music would besuperimposed quite often stretched into new intervallic shapes through the demands of the completely pre-formed harmonic structure.16.99 EUR - Voir plus - Acheter Voir couverture |

Di-Arezzo | Michael Nyman: Concerto For Amplified Harpsichord And Strings: Harpsichord:
Quoting Nyman: This Concerto was composed during the winter of 1994/95 for Elisabeth Chojnacka who gave the first performance with the Michael Nyman String Orchestra on 29th April 1995 in the Queen Elizabeth Hall London. Itshistory is eccentric and cumulative. I had met Elisabeth in Paris about a year earlier while I was working on the soundtrack for Diane Kurys' film A la Folie (Six Days Six Nights). I was attempting to persuade her to play mysolo piece The Convertibility of Lute Strings (1992) but she expressed a passion only for tangos. As luck would have it one of the cues of the Kurys score was what I fondly called a tango. Elisabeth showed interest in this andI subsequently turned it in to a harpsichord solo. Sadly during the writing of the piece my friend the composer Tim Souster died tragically. Elisabeth's enthusiasm for Tango for Tim encouraged me to write the Concerto forher. The Concerto is shaped as a very simple ABA form - the outer sections derived from The Convertibility for Lute Strings enfold an elaborated version of Tango for Tim. After the first performance Elisabeth decreed thatthe true potential of the Concerto could only be fulfilled by the addition of a cadenza. This was duly composed in the summer of 1995 - a toccata derived from harmonies first heard in the immediate post-Tango for Tim Convertibility material. (Elisabeth subsequently ordained that the cadenza could also have a life outside the Concerto as a concert piece if it had a few extensions added. Hence - inevitably the title of the piece - ElisabethGets Her Way.Duration c. 22mins.42.50 EUR - Voir plus - Acheter Voir couverture |

Di-Arezzo | Michael Nyman: Michael Nyman: MGV (Musique A Grande Vitesse): Orchestra: Score
Michael Nyman's Musique A Grande Vitesse (MGV) translates as ‘high speed music’ and was commissioned by the Festival de Lille for the inauguration of the TGV North EuropeanParis-Lille line in 1993. This piece of sheet music runs continuously but was conceived as an abstract imaginary journey; or rather five inter-connected journeys each ending with a slow mainly stepwise melody which isonly heard in its 'genuine' form when the piece reaches its destination. Thematic 'transformation' is a key to MGV as a whole. Throughout the piece ideas - rhythmic melodic harmonic motivic textural -constantly change their identity as they pass through different musical 'environments'. The opening bars establish both a recurrent rhythmic principle - 9 11 or 13-beat rhythmic cycles heard against a regular 8 - and aharmonic process - chord sequences (mainly over C and E) which have the note E in common. (Coincidentally MGV begins in C and ends in E). A later scalic syncopated figure (again first heard over C E and A)begins the second section featuring Brass in D flat. The topography of MGV should be experienced without reference to planning description or timetables. Its tempo changes and unpredictable slowings downbear no logical relation to the high speed of the Paris-Lille journey while the temptation to treat MGV as a concerto grosso with the Michael Nyman band as the ripeno was resisted: more suitably theband (amplified in live performance) lays down the tracks on which MGV runs.44.99 EUR - Voir plus - Acheter Voir couverture |
Di-Arezzo | Michael Nyman: The Photography Of Chance (Piano Trio): Violin & Cello: Score and
For Violin Cello and Piano. Composer's Notes 'Even though this work was intended to celebrate (as instructed by the commissioner Brolly Arts of Salt LakeCity) the wildlife and landscape of Utah (and especially its birdlife notably the sora which has a noticeable influence on the melodic writing at times) the title refers ironically in this 'natural' context to the re-seeing’of (mainly industrial) reality in early Soviet photography. Aleksandr Rodchenko (1881-1956) drew attention to the new type of photographer as someone who photographs 'facts' and who is able through photography to fight against'looking like art' with high quality examples and to do this you have to experiment going as far as the ‘easelisation’ of the photographic art.The work was written for and first performed by the Ahn Trio in November2004 in Salt Lake City and is dedicated to the memory of John Peel the British radio disc jockey who died during the final stages of its composition.' - Michael Nyman37.50 EUR - Voir plus - Acheter Voir couverture |

Di-Arezzo | Michael Nyman: Concerto For Violin and Orchestra: Violin: Instrumental Work
The Violin Concerto was commissioned by Stiftung Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival. It was first performed by Gidon Kremer (violin) and the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival Orchester conducted by DennisRussell Davies at the Musikhalle Hamburg Germany on 29 August 2003. Interpolated within this one-minute-one-movement layout is a recurrent refrain where the soloist articulates one of the basic harmonic foundations of anumber of the one minute sections (six dominant 7ths - on E F sharp C A B D) in an undisguised Bachian fashion. The slow arpeggios in the later variants of the refrain not unexpectedly find themselves sharing a bed with theopening of Berg's Violin Concerto. Nyman has effectively adopted Berg's orchestral template with two exceptions - the omission of the alto Saxophone and replaced Berg's Percussion section with Marimba and Vibraphone mallet instruments which intertwine with the soloist in the Concerto. Alban Berg's Violin Concerto was dedicated to 'the memory of an angel' Manon Gropius. Nyman's Concerto was dedicated to the memory of DanielToscan du Plantier a friend and neighbour - in Nyman's words 'certainly no angel but a major figure in the recording and film industries'. Di-Arezzo | Michael Nyman: Self Laudatory Hymn Of Inanna: Chamber Ensemble: Score
Michael Nyman was inspired to write this single-movement piece Self Laudatory Hymn Of Inanna And Her Omnipotence in 1992 after having discovered the text in the library of a friend. The words belong to Inanna the Queen of theHeavens in the Sumerian religion who proclaims audaciously all that her father Enil has bestowed upon her. Nyman composed the piece for counterTenor James Bowman and recorded it on his eighteenth album Time Will Pronounce:The 1992 Commissions. Unlike many of Nyman’s other albums this one features only one member of the Michael Nyman Band.Nyman is a contemporary British composer of richly layered modular minimalist pieces often incorporatingperiod instruments or instrumentation outside the normal Orchestral offerings. He is particularly well known for his film scores including The Piano The Cook The Thief His Wife and Her Lover Prospero’s Books and The Claim among many others. His work is widely performed.8.99 EUR - Voir plus - Acheter Voir couverture |

Di-Arezzo | Michael Nyman: Mose: Double Choir: Vocal Score
Composer's Notes:When I was asked to write a piece to celebrate the restoration of Michelangelo’s Mosè I returned to the paper written by Sigmund Freud on the sculpture which I had discovered by chance many years ago.Freud’s fascination with the Mosè began in 1901 when he visited San Pietro in Vincoli for the first time. A series of subsequent visits culminated in the publication of the Moses of Michaelangelo in 1914 from which I have usedtwo extracts to ‘frame’ the main body of my text which consists of selections from Michelangelo’s own letters. In 1505 Michelangelo was summoned to Rome by Pope Julis II and was commissioned to build a tomb which would reflectthe magnificence of the Pontiff’s reign. Forty years and four Popes later the tomb modified and scaled down due to a variety of financial and political changes of circumstance was completed. The letters give the impression ofan idealist at work: Michelangelo personally selected each piece of marble and supervised its transportation to Rome by his more worldly and capricious paymasters. His creative and artistic frustrations are mirrored by problems ofa more a practical nature; payment for both his services and the materials is erratic. At one point his is accused of embezzling funds. The complete text tells the story of an artists struggle and eventual triumph againstexternal circumstances. The Mosè by virtue of its very nature combines the elements of the physical and the spiritual with which Michelangelo challenged and eventually triumphed over the restraints of the context in which he hadto work. The lovingly selected and cared for marble in the hands of the unpaid exploited artist is transformed into something more substantial and eternal. Di-Arezzo | Michael Nyman: On The Fiddle For Violin And Piano: Violin: Instrumental Work
On The Fiddle consists of three pieces derived from scores to three Peter Greenaway films. The first piece Full Fathom Five is a version of the Shakespeare song setting made for Prospero's Books (1990). The second 'AngelfishDecay' is an arrangement of an arrangement: the music for the speeded up time lapse decaying animal sequences in A Zed And Two Noughts (1985) was written for two violins and a harpsichord. This was subsequently 'reduced' to aviolin solo for Zoo Caprices (1986). For 'On The Fiddle' a piano part has been added. The final piece 'Miserere Paraphrase' was written for use in The Cook The Thief His Wife And Her Lover (1989) and is a transcription ofNyman's setting of the 'Miserere' text (Psalm 51) sung in the film by a boy soprano and mixed chorus.
