Art Tatum: TatumArt - Live Performances 1934-1956 (10 CDs + DVD)
The incomparable pianist Art Tatum died more than fifty years ago, yet his amazing playing and recordings left an indelible mark on jazz and continue to astonish, inspire, and set a seemingly unattainable pinnacle of excellence for today's pianists in all genres of music. For many, their first hearing of Tatum was a transforming moment. This ten CD Tatum box contains over twelve hours of his music, almost all of it recorded live. On most of these occasions he was free to play what he wanted to for as long as he wished, to talk to his friends, and even sing along when the spirit moved him. His competitive spirit burst forth when he played with others. As always, the articulation and the conceptions were impeccable. The vast majority of the tracks on CD's one through nine have been previously issued only on the Storyville label. Twenty-one of the twenty-three tracks on CD ten included here have never been issued before.Because Art Tatum was legally blind, most written scores of his performances were first laboriously transcribed from disc recordings, and later from CDs. There is an almost cottage industry of pianists attempting to play some of these, or their own transcriptions. It is extraordinary that so many pianists have tried to play the music of Art Tatum, even though it was not composed by him. Of course, although Art was not a composer in the traditional sense, he was always re-composing the American popular song by creating new harmonies, textures, rhythms, and enhancements. The results were models of structure even when totally and newly improvised. This box presents the Piano genius as you've never heard him before. Song List:A Ghost Of A Chance; Ain't Misbehavin'; Air Mail Special; Aunt Hagar’s Blues ; Basin Street Blues; Begin The Beguine; Blue Skies; Body And Soul; Can't We Be Friends; Caravan; Cherokee; Chinatown, My Chinatown; Come Rain Or Come Shi

Art Tatum Live: Volume Five 1951
Di-Arezzo
Art Tatum Live: Volume Five 1951
This live CD was recorded at the newly-opened Embers Club in New York City in 1951. The first four tunes are trio numbers with Everett Barksdale on guitar and Slam Stewart on bass. The remainder are piano solos. Art Tatum was a true, unique genius of jazz. His lightning speed, dynamics, nuances and complex ideas on the keyboard have never been equaled. The repertoire consists mostly of crowd-pleasers, including compositions by Duke Ellington, the Gershwin brothers, Benny Goodman, Rogers and Hart, Harlen Arlen and of course Art Tatum's mentor, Fats Waller. In spite of the noisy audience on these live sessions, Tatum suceeds in showing the audience, and CD listener, why he deserves his status as the father of all jazz pianists. While Tatum plays mostly tunes, and quotes of tunes, that the audience recognizes, it doesn't diminish the quality of his playing.

These never-released-before live sessions include an interesting three-minute interview with jazz journalist Leonard Feather.

Art Tatum Live: Volume Two 1944-1945
This is the second of an eight CD, 188-track set comprised of previously unissued broadcast performances by the legendary jazz pianist, Art Tatum. The music on this twenty-one track album was all recorded in 1944-45, primarily in New York City. The repertoire is mostly popular tunes of the day, including compositions by Jerome Kern, the Gershwin brothers, Fats Waller and Duke Ellington but also includes two classical numbers by Dvorak. Art Tatum was one of the most brilliant pianists - in any genre - who ever lived. His astonishing technique, fantastic creativity and blinding speed and virtuosity have never been equaled. Thanks to his great technical command he could represent the instruments of an entire orchestra into his solo playing. Tatum's astonishing virtuosity is evident on every number here but an especially exceptional example can be found by listening to How High The Mooon. Two other highlights on this wonderful CD are Tatum's spoken introduction to She's Funny That Way and his five-minute long solo-piano Gershwin melody.

Featuring Tiny Grimes, Slam Stewart and Remo Palmieri on guitar, Specs Powell on drums and Murray McEachern and his AFRS orchestra.
