Michael Nyman: Anne De Lucy Songs
Commissioned by and written for Nicola Walker Smith in October 1992, this set of songs takes as its starting point material from The Upside-Down Violin at Expo '92 in Seville by The Michael Nyman Band and the Orquestra Andalusi de Tetuoan. The Moroccan orchestra plays only monophonically and consequently I wrote a 'pure' melody line - that is, one not built on harmony. The harmonic content of Anne de Lucy Songs is thus derived from the melody for the first time in my work. The text is an ode to the great Renaissance theorist and musical speculator Salinas by Fray Luis de Leon.

Michael Nyman: MGV (Musique A Grande Vitesse)- Full Score
The composer writes 'MGV (Musique à Grand Vitesse - High-Speed Music) was commissioned by the Festival de Lille for the inauguration of the TGV North-European line and was first performed by the Michael Nyman Band and the Orchestre national de Lille under Jean-Claude Casadesus on 26 September 1993. MGV runs continuously but was conceived as an abstract, imaginary journey; or rather five inter-connected journeys, each ending with a slow, mainly stepwise melody which is only heard in its 'genuine' form when the piece reaches its destination. The thematic 'transformation' is a key to MGV as a whole, where musical ideas- rhythmic, melodic, harmonic, motivic, textural - constantly change their identity as they pass through different musical 'environments'. For instance the opening bars establish both a recurrent rhythmic principle - 9, 11, or 13-beat rhythmic cycles heard against a regular 8 - and a harmonic process - chord sequences (mainly over C and E) which have the note E in common. (Coincidentally, MGV begins in C and ends in E). A later scalic, syncopated figure (again first heard over C, E and A) begins the second section, featuring brass, in D flat. And so on: the topography of MGV should be experienced without reference to planning, description or timetables. Tempo changes, unpredictable slowings down, bear no logical relation to the high speed of the Paris-Lille journey, while the temptation to treat MGV as a concerto grosso, with the Michael Nyman band as the ripeno, was resisted: more suitably the Band (amplified in live performance) lays down the tracks on which MGV runs.'

Michael Nyman: Flugelhorn And Piano
This piece was commissioned in 1991 by Graham Ashton for his album 'The Contemporary Trumpet'.

Quoting Graham Ashton: Michael Nyman wrote Flugel and Piano for me during a period when I felt his approach to the writing and recording of his music was changing quite considerably. I had given him very few guidelines as I did not want to restrict his writing. I knew the result would be a difficult piece, as Michael had often said he likes to hear the performer 'fighting' the instrument. Flugel and Piano is a fight for a couple of reasons: firstly, the flugel does not like being played in the key of D sharp minor, especially with a trombone 'bucket mute' - unfortunately, this was all that I could find to fit over the larger flugel bell; secondly, the flugel enjoys being flat at the top register, making top Cs and Ds a nightmare! Michael's reaction on hearing the recording was that he found the piece surprisingly emotional.

At every turn Nyman has proved eminently practical. Not for him the ivory tower anguish of a tormented composer grappling with abstract systems. Michael Nyman: Six Celan Songs Full Score
For Low Female Voice And Ensemble.

This cycle of settings of poems by Paul Celan was written between May and July 1990 for Ute Lemper. The texts are taken from the following collections: 'Chanson einer Dame im Schatten' and 'Corona' from Mohn und Gedachtnis (1952), 'Nachtlich geschurzt' from Von Schwelle zu Schwelle (1955), 'Blume' from Sprachgitter (1959), and 'Es war Erde in ihnen' and 'Psalm' from Die Niemandsrose of 1963.

The settings of 'Corona' and 'Blume' both introduce an eight-bar chord sequence derived from Chopin's Mazurka in A minor, Op.17 No.4 (the introduction to which was used by Gorecki in his Symphony No.3).

Michael Nyman: Concerto For Amplified Harpsichord And Strings
Quoting Nyman: This Concerto was composed during the winter of 1994/95 for Elisabeth Chojnacka, who gave the first performance with the Michael Nyman String Orchestra on 29th April 1995 in the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London. Its history is eccentric and cumulative. I had met Elisabeth in Paris about a year earlier while I was working on the soundtrack for Diane Kurys' film A la Folie (Six Days, Six Nights). I was attempting to persuade her to play my solo piece The Convertibility of Lute Strings (1992) but she expressed a passion only for tangos. As luck would have it, one of the cues of the Kurys score was what I fondly called a tango. Elisabeth showed interest in this and I subsequently turned it in to a harpsichord solo. Sadly, during the writing of the piece my friend the composer Tim Souster died tragically. Elisabeth's enthusiasm for Tango for Tim encouraged me to write the Concerto for her.

The Concerto is shaped as a very simple ABA form - the outer sections, derived from The Convertibility for Lute Strings, enfold an elaborated version of Tango for Tim. After the first performance, Elisabeth decreed that the true potential of the Concerto could only be fulfilled by the addition of a cadenza. This was duly composed in the summer of 1995 - a toccata derived from harmonies first heard in the immediate post-Tango for Tim, Convertibility material. (Elisabeth subsequently ordained that the cadenza could also have a life outside the Concerto as a concert piece if it had a few extensions added. Hence - inevitably, the title of the piece - Elisabeth Gets Her Way.

Duration c. 22mins.

Michael Nyman: String Quartet No. 4 (Score)
String Quartet No.4 was written for the Camilli Quartet who gave the first performance at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, April 1995. It is dedicated to the memory of Nyman's composition teacher, Alan Bush.

This quartet is a narrative made up of a chain of twelve complete but often cross-related movements, each quite simple in design. For instance, the Scottish melody first heard in the second half of I is hinted at in the 2nd violin/viola in the second fast section of II and is directly quoted again during III and XII. The theme of the fast section of IV is taken up again in VIII; IX reverts to the mood of the opening of I, while the rising scale/syncopated themes of II, IX and the bass of X and XII are related. X also reintroduces the slow harmonics theme from VII. XII is (apparently) cast in the form of a baroque French rondeau. The main theme of VI was plucked out of the Quartet and used in my score for Christopher Hampton's film Carrington.

Michael Nyman: String Quartet No. 3 Parts
String Quartet No.3 was written for, and first performed by the Balanescu Quartet, February 1990 at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London. Duration 16 minutes. A score is available on sale..

Quoting composer: In the summer of 1989 I composed a choral work, Out of the Ruins, for Agnieszka Piotrowska's BBC2 documentary which dealt with the physical and emotional responses of some inhabitants of Leninakhan to the earthquake which devastated Armenia the previous December. When he heard the recording of the work that I made with the Holy Echmiadzin Chorus under the fervent conducting of Khoren Meykhanejian, Alex Balanescu suggested turning Out of the Ruins into a string quartet. There seemed no reason or opportunity to do this until I felt the need to add to the intensity of my experiences in Armenia the no less profound experience of witnessing the images of the Romanian revolution on television during the later part of December 1989.

The compositional procedure was as follows: to take Out of the Ruins as a template on which the Romanian vocal or instrumental music would be superimposed, quite often stretched into new intervallic shapes though the demands of the completely performed harmonic structure.

Nyman: The Piano Sings (Score)

Nyman: The Piano Sings (Score)
Score for 'The Piano Sings'.

Quoting Nyman: 'In writing for The Piano, I had to establish not only the usual repertoire of music for the film, but a specific repertoire of piano music that would have been Ada's repertoire as a pianist. I began creating her a folio of material that I imagined she had in her head, that her fingers carried around with her, almost as if she had been the composer.

Initially I was unsure as to how precisely to pitch the style: it had to be a 'possible' mid-nineteenth century music but not pastiche and obviously written in 1992. But then I had the perception that, since Ada was from Scotland, it was logical to use Scottish folk and popular songs as the basis of our music. Once I hit on that idea the whole thing fell into place.

It's as though I was writing the music of another composer who happened to live in Scotland, then New Zealand in the mid 1850s. Someone who was obviously not a professional composer or pianist. So there had to be a modesty to it.'

Scored for Soprano and String Quartet. Separate parts are also available on sale.

Michael Nyman: Mose (Vocal Score)
Composer's Notes:
When I was asked to write a piece to celebrate the restoration of Michelangelo's Mosè, I returned to the paper written by Sigmund Freud on the sculpture which I had discovered by chance many years ago. Freud's fascination with the Mosè began in 1901 when he visited San Pietro in Vincoli for the first time. A series of subsequent visits culminated in the publication of the Moses of Michaelangelo in 1914, from which I have used two extracts to 'frame' the main body of my text which consists of selections from Michelangelo's own letters.
In 1505 Michelangelo was summoned to Rome by Pope Julis II and was commissioned to build a tomb which would reflect the magnificence of the Pontiff's reign. Forty years and four Popes later, the tomb, modified and scaled down due to a variety of financial and political changes of circumstance, was completed. The letters give the impression of an idealist at work: Michelangelo personally selected each piece of marble and supervised its transportation to Rome by his more worldly and capricious paymasters. His creative and artistic frustrations are mirrored by problems of a more a practical nature; payment for both his services and the materials is erratic. At one point his is accused of embezzling funds.
The complete text tells the story of an artists struggle and eventual triumph against external circumstances. The Mosè, by virtue of its very nature combines the elements of the physical and the spiritual with which Michelangelo challenged and eventually triumphed over the restraints of the context in which he had to work. The lovingly selected and cared for marble in the hands of the unpaid, exploited artist is transformed into something more substantial and eternal. Michael Nyman

Michael Nyman: On The Fiddle For Cello And Piano
On The Fiddle consists of three pieces derived from scores to three Peter Greenaway films.
The first piece Full Fathom Five, is a version of the Shakespeare song setting made for Prospero's Books (1990).
The second Angelfish Decay, is an arrangement of an arrangement: the music for the speeded up time lapse decaying animal sequences in A Zed And Two Noughts (1985) was written for two violins and a harpsichord. This was subsequently 'reduced' to a violin solo for Zoo Caprices (1986). For On The Fiddle a piano part has been added.
The final piece Miserere Paraphrase, was written for use in The Cook, The Thief, His Wife And Her Lover (1989), and is a transcription of Nyman's setting of the 'Miserere' text (Psalm 51) sung in the film by a boy soprano and mixed chorus.
