The Ragtime Dance by Scott Joplin originated as a short ragtime folk ballet, accompanied by narration and choreography. It was first performed in 1899, but because of hesitation concerning the marketability of such a work, it was not published until 1902. As was feared, it was a commercial failure, however this led to a later 1906 publication in a solo piano arrangement. Surnommé « le roi du ragtime », ce pianiste et compositeur américain (1868?1917) a écrit une bonne centaine de rags, parmi lesquels les célèbres « Maple Leaf Rag » et « The Entertainer ». Ce genre musical se reconnaît aisément : une mélodie syncopée accompagnée d?une ligne de basse régulière au rythme simple. Comme ces deux éléments sont en partie décalés et, parfois, se contrarient même, la musique swingue beaucoup. « Rag » signifiant « lambeau », le terme « ragtime » provient donc de cette impression de déchirement entre mélodie et ligne de basse. La plupart des rags sont écrits pour le piano. Ils ont joui d?une immense popularité au tournant des XIXe et XXe siècles, principalement grâce à Joplin lui-même. Après sa disparition, l?ère du ragtime en tant que courant dominant s?acheva. Les années 1970 ont connu un regain d?intérêt pour Scott Joplin, surtout grâce au succès cinématographique The Sting (L?Arnaque), dont la bande sonore comprend plusieurs de ses compositions, y compris « The Entertainer ».
